Shailene Diann Woodley (born November 15, 1991) is an American actress. She is best known for portraying Amy Juergensin the ABC Family series The Secret Life of the American Teenager and for co-starring alongside George Clooney in the critically acclaimed 2011 film The Descendants, for which she won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Femaleand was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress - Motion Picture. For her performance in the upcoming film The Spectacular Now, she won the Dramatic Special Jury Award for Acting at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.Woodley will be starring as Beatrice Prior in the upcoming film adaptation of Veronica Roth's Divergent in 2014. She has also been cast as Hazel Grace Lancaster in the upcoming film adaptation of John Green's novel The Fault in Our Stars.
Early life
Woodley was born in Simi Valley, California. Her mother, Lori (née Victor), is a middle school counselor, and her father, Lonnie Woodley, is a school principal.She has a younger brother, Tanner. When she was 15 and a freshman, her parents divorced and she was also diagnosed with scoliosis. She was put in a chest-to-hips plastic brace to straighten her spine. The summer after high school, when she was 18, she moved to New York with her then-boyfriend. While living in New York, she worked at American Apparel as a sales associate. The couple broke up and she stayed in New York to pursue acting.
Acting career
In 2002, she appeared in small television roles on Without a Trace and The District. In 2005, she was nominated for aYoung Artist Award (YAA) in the Category: Best Performance in a TV Movie, Miniseries or Special—Leading Young Actress for her role in A Place Called Home as California Ford. She also originally played Kaitlin Cooper in The O.C. She appeared as Felicity Merriman in Felicity: An American Girl Adventure, for which she received a Young Artists award nomination in the Category: Best Performance in a TV Movie, Miniseries or Special (Comedy or Drama). This is one of two TV specials that Woodley appeared in with John Schneider. She appeared on Crossing Jordan as a young Jordan, as well as other television series including Everybody Loves Raymond, My Name is Earl, CSI: NY, and Close to Home. In 2007, Woodley appeared in Cold Caseas Sarah Gunden, the murder victim's younger Amish sister, who originally brought the case to the investigators' attention. Woodley stars in the ABC Family series The Secret Life of the American Teenager as Amy Juergens, a 15 year old who discovers she is pregnant. The show explores the effects of her pregnancy on her family, friends and herself as well as life at Ulysses S. Grant High School in California.
In 2011 Woodley made her feature film debut in a breakout performance in The Descendants, for which she received critical acclaim and has been nominated for a Golden Globe and more than a dozen other awards. She also won the Independent Spirit Award. In this film, she starred alongside George Clooney as Alexandra King, the troubled daughter of Clooney's character. Woodley starred in the film adaptation of Tim Tharp's novel, The Spectacular Now. She plays a social outcast girl trying to plan for the future who meets a boy who is a senior in high school who likes to party and live in the moment. He begins to date her as a project and realizes he has the power to permanently impact her life. Production of the film occurred in the summer of 2012 and it premiered at Sundance in January 2013.She has also recently signed on to star in White Bird, an independent film about a troubled young woman whose life is upended following the mysterious disappearance of her mother, directed by Gregg Araki. In October 2012, it was announced that Woodley was offered the role of Mary Jane Watson in the upcoming sequel to the 2012 film The Amazing Spider-Man. On June 19, 2013 it was announced that Mary Jane was cut from the film. Director Marc Webb told The Hollywood Reporter that the cut was "a creative decision to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen and their relationship," and that everyone loved working with Woodley. On March 19, 2013, it was announced that Woodley had accepted the role starring as Hazel Grace Lancaster in the film adaptation of John Green's novel The Fault in Our Stars. On taking acting classes: “I think a lot of people still go to acting classes. I go for my own benefit. I feel like I become a stronger person from acting class. When you do improv exercises, it helps your brain function quicker. When you do scenes, you learn a different color of yourself, and you get to explore different emotions. I’m really lucky, too; the class I go to, everybody’s very close. It’s like a family. It’s a very safe environment in order to dive into some crazy scenes and be vulnerable.”
On whether she loves to dress up: “No, I’m not a girlie girl at all. I never wear dresses. I’m always in either long, baggy skirts that I can still do ‘crisscross applesauce’ in, or blue jeans. I’m very lucky to work with a stylist who cares about fashion, because I don’t at all. And I’m very lucky to have a makeup artist and hair guy who are really good at what they do, because I would go to events with no makeup and no hair and in pajamas if I could.”

On living a healthy lifestyle: “I just started adapting my lifestyle to that of indigenous people, and what I realized is that we’re all indigenous creatures on this planet. The whole concept of re-wilding came about through some really good friends of mine, and it’s basically about adapting to your current situation. If you’re in the city, then you can’t go back to hunter-and-gatherer times, so you have to adapt to the lifestyle that’s out there.”
On living in so many different cities for filming: “Sometimes it’s a struggle. But as I was saying, it’s all about balance. Right now I’m filming in Chicago, and I’m in an apartment building 35 stories up in the air, and I’ve never lived in a city where I have to be careful about walking around my house naked because the business office next door will be able to see me at 7 a.m. [both laugh] But I still have my crock pot of chaga mushroom tea brewing all the time …”
On going to Sundance with The Spectacular Now: “Well, I go to Sundance every year because of a friend who has a condo there, but this was the first time that I’ve gone with a movie. We filmed The Spectacular Now in the South with a bunch of people who hadn’t really worked on too many movies before, so it was a really different experience than working on a bigger film. It was cool to reunite with the cast and the director because everyone got so close while we were filming and we’re so proud of the movie. Presenting it to the film world was also exciting.”

Shailene Woodley's Mary Jane Cut Out of 'Amazing Spider-Man 2'
Shailene Woodley‘s role as Mary Jane Watson in the highly anticipated sequelThe Amazing Spider-Man 2 has been dropped to the cutting room floor, according to Entertainment Weekly.
The 21-year-old actress spent a week filming scenes in New York City for the upcoming superhero flick, but now her role won’t be introduced until the series’ third film.
“Of course I’m bummed. But I am a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason… Based on the proposed plot, I completely understand the need for holding off on introducing [Mary Jane] until the next film,”Shailene told the mag.
“I made a creative decision to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen and their relationship,” director Marc Webb added (viaTHR). “Shailene is an incredibly talented actress and while we only shot a few scenes with Mary Jane, we all love working with her.”
It is being speculated that the role of Mary Jane will be recast for the third film.

Shailene Woodley will not appear in Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and neither will her character, Mary Jane Watson, THR has confirmed.

"I made a creative decision to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen and their relationship," said Webb. "Shailene is an incredibly talented actress, and while we only shot a few scenes with Mary Jane, we all love working with her.”
The plan now is for Watson, one of Peter Parker/Spider-Man’s iconic love interests, to be introduced in the third movie.
It is likely that Woodley will not return and that the part will be recast.
